Initiative aims to set the standard for cannabis laboratory testing

Trackloop Analytics Corp. and Sigma Analytical Services Inc. plan to develop the first pilot-scale effort in Canada using the former company’s fully integrated hardware and software tracking and tracing platform in a lab environment for the cannabis industry.

“Quality testing is an important step in the process for both producers and consumers of cannabis. Sigma are leaders in cannabis science and we are excited to be working with them to develop what will be the standard for the transparent tracking of cannabis throughout the testing process,” Trackloop chief technology officer Zayn Kalyan says in a press release.

Trackloop, an analytics software company, reports the project builds on its existing platform for tracking goods and enterprises along the supply-chain, from seed to sale. The goal is to make it a reliable source for end-to-end monitoring of urban delivery operations for temperature-sensitive products, including cannabis, the press release notes.

The platform is also built to meet the demand for a system to address the complexities of testing for cannabinoid and terpene potency, which includes trace microbial and chemical contaminants, such as pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents. The joint development with Sigma, a cannabis and hemp compliance lab offering testing and analytical services, could help businesses establish standards of traceability and stay ahead of increasing regulatory requirements.

Tracing inventory for testing limits and quality control is a key challenge in testing and reporting products in compliance with the Cannabis Act, the press release adds.
